Brandy was Nathan’s best friend from church, they’ve known each other since forever. Church? Yes church, his aunt was a Christian and so is Nathan’s mom. Nathan used to go because he felt like he had to, later it became a choice. At first it was to impress Brandy but later he started to question his decision, from impressing to expression. But after what happened he barely went and decided to drown his quilt and pain in alcohol.
“Oh hi, I’ve been very busy. But I got a tuna sandwich if you want?” “Busy? Busy?! Really it’s just switching sandwiches and having a little chat how can you be busy for that, tell me?” Brandy said grinning while rolling her eyes at the same time.
The thing about these two is that they weren’t separable as kids, even in high school they were very close as freshmen, but things slowly started to change. New friends, new interests, different classes.
Not to lose their friendship they decided to have sandwich-switch days by Brandy’s locker every Monday, (to catch up on the weekends) Wednesdays, (to talk about the boring teachers) and Fridays. (to talk about every random thing that comes to mind, and some details in their every daily life)
They talked for a while just like old times, and it always feels good when you do that. “It was good talking to you but we’re not done, come over to my house later today and if you don’t I will personally show up at yours” Brandy said while putting her books in her backpack, ready to go to class.
Nathan decided to go to Brandy’s house, he needed some distraction other than getting drunk on a Wednesday night, which definitely wasn’t his plan. Brandy did not know about his drinking and smoking, at least that’s what he thought. He felt helpless and didn’t want brandy to know, it’s that kind of feeling when you feel like everything and everyone is against you when it comes to being open about your thoughts and feelings, besides Nathan didn’t want brandy to think differently of him.
“Good you showed up! My parents aren’t home yet, you know where everything is, it is and will always be self service.”
Brandy was a girl with interests in others, she was open about being a Christian and was willing to be there for others. She was a little like aunt Stella but Brandy would stare at you until you come clean about the truth you’re holding back, because she knows, she always did.
7:00 PM Wednesday Night, the night when Nathan came clean about everything. It’s hard to lie to a person like Brandy, but unlike other people Brandy wasn’t there to judge.
Brandy could tell him he was dumb to even turn his back to God and drown in his guilt, smoking and drinking wouldn’t get him anywhere. Hit him, and give the parenting speech about how alcohol and cigarets are bad for you. Look at him and cry (as if that would help?) so that he would feel even more quilt than he’s already carrying. But Brandy isn’t like that, she decided to let him talk, God only knows why he did the things he did.
“It’s no excuse, it was an escape. I didn’t know why I did it, I felt alone and hopeless. I started drinking when my dad decide to blame me for everything, throwing bottles to my face as if I was nothing, meant nothing and deserved nothing. Smoking was the best way to forget all the pain, getting out this world, you know? Ever since my mom had to go back to Mexico I never felt the same, a peace of me left and when my aunt died my other half died with her. Am I ever going to feel normal again?”
“Life isn’t easy, they say God gives his toughest battles to his stronger soldiers. The truth is you made it too hard for yourself, I guess God knew you could handle it because you’re right here standing in my house unless you’re a ghost. Which I hope not, but the thing is, you could’ve come to me, we could’ve prayed. You haven’t been going to church since everything that happend, I knew you had it hard but it was your own battle you had to fight, not completely alone but together with God, it was also very hard to talk to you since you’ve been avoiding me, sandwich buddies remember?”
They prayed, on Sunday Nathan decided to go to church with Brandy. He felt different, he felt new but what happend that he could see a whole different view?..
Luke 22:46: “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
Fight as hard as you can because through Christ everything is possible, don’t get distracted by what happens in this world, in your life and around you. The generation we life in right now is in great danger, the youth is being tempted by electronic devices, experimenting things that were referred as sins in the bible. I could write a 3000 word post of Nathan changing his ways, he could end up falling in the arms of darkness or be picked up by the light of God. Just as our lives we have to make our story work, are we willing to give up our possessions for an internal life ? Or burn in fire and fear because we were blinded by a 100 dollor bill?
God loves all, God loves us so much he gave up his only son. Nathan’s story is not finished but he decided to come clean. it’s your turn to finish his story, what do you think? He walked through darkness, he walked through live. but is he ready to change his whole life?
Isaiah 1:18: “Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool”.
Roman 8:34-39: “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
(I decided not to make a whole new story, it’s important for us to make our own choices. Nathan came clean and told Brandy everything, Brandy is just a friend who is as close to god as Nathan was before. His story changed twice, I could’ve written an happy ending or i could’ve made it a sad one. Now for the third change it’s up to you how think about how things will end, not only in Nathan’s life but also in your own. Where ar you know and are you ready for God to take over ?)
